Ingredients:
- Dhania Seeds
- Jeera (Cumin Seeds)
- Methi Seeds
- Hing (Asafoetida)
- Black Pepper
- Udid Dal (Black Gram Dal)
- Red Dry Chilly
- Curry Leaves
- Khus Khus (Poppy Seeds)
Method:
- Cook the Dal:
Rinse 90g of tur dal and cook it in a pressure cooker with 3 cups of water and tomatoes for 3-4 whistles. Let it cool naturally. - Prepare the Tempering (Tadka):
Heat oil in a small pan. Add mustard seeds, cumin seeds, hing (asafoetida), dried red chilies, and curry leaves. Let them crackle. - Combine Ingredients:
Add the cooked dal and chopped tomatoes to the tempering. Stir in turmeric powder, Rasam powder, and chili powder (optional for extra spice). - Simmer and Adjust:
Simmer the mixture for 5-7 minutes, allowing the flavors to meld. Adjust the consistency by adding water as needed—rasam should be a bit watery. - Season and Serve:
Add salt to taste and garnish with freshly chopped coriander leaves. Serve hot with rice or idli.
Tips:
- For a tangier flavor, add a teaspoon of tamarind paste or a squeeze of lime juice.
- For spicier rasam, increase dried red chili or add cayenne pepper.
- To make the rasam richer, add a tablespoon of ghee (clarified butter).
Enjoy the comforting and aromatic taste of South India's traditional Rasam, perfect for soothing your senses!
